A fire control system is a military technology comprising several components, such as radar, ballistics computer, various sensors, stabilizing systems, and gun elevation systems, designed to assist a weapon system in identifying, tracking, and hitting a target. Fire control system are of two main types, namely, direct fire control and indirect fire control. A direct fire control system locates a target which is in its line of sight with the help of a gun director or various optical scopes. An indirect fire control system allows a gun to fire at a target not in its line of sight with the help of a radar or Electro-Optic/Infrared (EO/IR) system. Most fire control system cater to indirect fire control except for automatic rifles and small weapons. A fire control radar or EO/IR system scans for and identifies threats and feeds this information to a ballistics computer which calculates the distance to the target, the wind speed, elevation required, and various other parameters. It trains the guns to fire at an estimated future location of the target if it is moving, or directly at the target if it is stationary. Military fire control system are advancing from automatic to automated by integrating fire control, C4I, and situational awareness with weapon systems. _________________ 1.
