A helicopter is an aircraft that is lifted and propelled by one or more horizontal rotors and a vertical propeller. Each rotor and propeller consist of two or more rotor blades. Helicopters are classified as rotorcraft or rotary-wing aircraft to distinguish them from fixed-wing aircraft because the helicopter derives its source of lift from the rotor blades rotating around a pole. It is capable of carrying up to twelve persons, depending upon the size and weight of the helicopter. Helicopters are often used in congested or isolated areas where fixed-wing aircraft are not able to take off or land.

COMPETITIVE LEADERSHIP MAPPING TERMINOLOGY

The Helicoptor vendors are placed into 4 categories based on their performance and reviews in each criterion: “visionary leaders,” “innovators,” “dynamic differentiators,” and “emerging companies".

VISIONARY LEADERS

Vendors that fall under this category generally receive high scores for most of the evaluation criteria. They have well-established product portfolios with strong market presence. They provide reputed products and services. They also have strong business strategies to strengthen their position in the 3D radar market.

DYNAMIC DIFFERENTIATORS

Dynamic differentiators are well-established vendors with strong business strategies. However, they have weaker product portfolios as compared to their competitors. They generally focus on a specific type of technology-related to a particular product.

INNOVATORS

Innovators are the vendors that have demonstrated substantial product innovations as compared to their competitors. They have an extensive product portfolio. However, they do not have strong growth strategies for their overall business.

EMERGING COMPANIES

Emerging companies are the vendors with niche product offerings, who have started to gain their foothold in the helicoptor market. They do not have strong business strategies as compared to other established vendors. They might be new entrants and may require some time before gaining significant traction in the market. Military helicopters are used for performing attack missions, such as ground attack missions, air-to-air combat, and maritime/naval attack by different defense forces operational worldwide. Apart from attacks, helicopters are also used to perform various defense operations, such as surveillance, observation, search & rescue, and evacuating the wounded soldiers from the front lines, firefighting, and other life-saving activities. Military helicopters are often known as combat helicopters. Combat helicopters include attack helicopters and combat support helicopters. Combat helicopters are deployed to operate anti-armor, air-to-ground, or air-to-air guided weapons and are equipped with an integrated fire control and aiming system for these weapons. Combat helicopters comprise specialized attack helicopters and multi-purpose attack helicopters, which are designed primarily to employ guided weapons. Combat support helicopters are equipped with a variety of self-defense and area suppression weapons, such as guns, cannons and unguided rockets, bombs or cluster bombs, or which may be equipped to perform other military functions. Helicopters are cost-effective means of transport for commercial applications. Commercial helicopters are designed to operate in challenging weather condition and in remote areas. However, unlike military helicopters, these do not need advanced sensors and equipment, which makes them cost-effective. Some of the major applications of civil & commercial helicopters include passenger transport, utility missions, multi-role missions, corporate transport, and emergency medical services operations, transportation of cargo and equipment, firefighting, construction, aerial fertilizing and seeding, logging, remote camp support, and media and entertainment support.
