Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) is a high-bandwidth shared fiber access technology. GPON standard G.984 has been approved by the International Telecom Union (ITU) and supports higher data rates than earlier PON technologies, with 2.5 Gbps downstream (to the subscriber) and 1.2 Gbps upstream (away from the subscriber) over a maximum logical reach of 60 km covering 32, 64, or 128 users per GPON interface.

GPON is a point-to-multipoint access mechanism that supports triple play service, high bandwidth, and long-reach service coverage to overcome the obstacle of access technology over twisted pair cables and reduces the network congestion. Its main characteristic is the use of passive splitters in the fiber distribution network, enabling one single feeding fiber from the provider’s central office to serve multiple homes and small businesses. This system consists of an optical line terminal (OLT) that connects several optical network terminals (ONTs) together using a passive optical distribution network (ODN).

VISIONARY LEADERS

Visionary leaders are the leading market players in terms of product portfolio, geographic reach, innovative technologies, and adoption of growth strategies. The SWIR market is moderately dominated by the players covering a major share of the market. These players have a broad product portfolio that caters to most of the regions globally. Visionary leaders primarily focus on acquiring the leading market position through their strong financial capabilities and well-established brand equity.

DYNAMIC DIFFERENTIATORS

Companies under this quadrant are well-established vendors with strong business strategies such as industry coverage, inorganic growth, geographic reach, and technology innovation. However, they have a weaker product portfolio than the innovators in this matrix. They generally focus on a specific type of technology related to the product considered in this market.

INNOVATORS

The need for innovative technologies to modernize access control offerings has resulted in innovations in the access control market. Innovators demonstrate substantial product innovations compared with their competitors. These players have wide product portfolios. However, they lack effective growth strategies for their overall business.

EMERGING COMPANIES

Emerging companies have niche service offerings and are gaining traction in the market. They do not have effective business strategies compared with other established players. They might be new entrants in the market and require more time before gaining significant traction in the market. The emerging companies also do not have a wide market presence. The GPON technology market poses a moderate threat to new entrants in establishing their footprint as there are many players offering GPON products in the broadband network and mobile backhaul market to diverse clientele groups globally.
